I just borrowed the film off of a well known friend and saw the ending myself, finally. I still stand with my view. That ending sucked!... no offense, but it wasn't living up to my expectations...

The only part of the ending I like was the music during the flashback scene. I mean, we know Aleu's floating away on the ice floe. We know Balto's going home. But really? The sky? It's been said before, but show Balto going home. Show Jenna's reaction when Balto tells her that Aleu's gone. Show some snippet of Aleu's new life with her pack. The ending leaves so many questions and feels so incomplete. Call me stupid, but I had to watch it several times to fully understand everything that was going on.
Also, where's the lvoing reunion Balto is supposed to have with his mother? Wouldn't Balto wonder where Aniu's been all those years? Hes just all "O_o You're my mother?" and watches her disappear. Again, wouldn't he have some questions for her? I don't have the movie script in front of me, but I know he asks her something about what he'll do next. All she does is say something along the lines of, "Only the journey home, my son," howls, and disappears. So many questions left unanswered. So many things left unexplained.

Don't get me wrong--I actually like the movie, and it's even my favorite out of the trilogy. There's just a few thigs I don't like: Muk & Luk, the ending, and the songs. I won't go into the first or last part here, but I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

I don't think the ending of the second film is bad (which is just my opinion). While it was hard for Balto to let Aleu go, he was happy that she had finally found her home. And after Balto and Aleu depart, Balto comes into contact with his mother that he hasn't seen since he was a pup. That seems like a happy ending for them and the film.

Perhaps the reason people don't care for it is because it is so abrupt. I like it, but maybe a scene where Balto returns to Jenna and says something cryptic or cheesy like 'She found who she really was' and then a shot of Balto gazing to the sky and we see Aleu howling with her pack or something would have been more satisfying to fans. I don't think we needed that line from Naga, maybe we could have just seen him watching Niju swim to shore and then give a nod to Balto. Balto didn't really care about that situation enough, and to be honest, neither did the fans.

I have to agree; there were too many overlooked questions. I had a few ideas about those things a while back - well, some of them at least - but I've never gotten around to writing them. Maybe one of these days I'll break down and write one more fanfic to cover some of this.

Personally, my biggest gripe with the series overall was that they never said what happened to Balto's dad.
