And maybe furies are more of a global animal, so only Night furies hunt around Berk, while other night furies hunt in other regions of the world mire suited to to their niche.

An interesting conjecture, I suppose.

i tend to be full of those.
I dont think i really agree with night furies being different colors. Everyone is always like, my night fury is green, mines red! But if they were different colors other than black, the wouldn't be night furies. And no one ever saw a night fury before, so they would have to have near perfect camouflage.

Your theory about night furies dying after they have offspring reminds me an awful lot of Water Horse...
And they are interesting thoughts, but let's be frank here - I don't think the writers really thought that far in depth. Many movies/shows where the character is "one of its kind" start out with the character being the only one either because they're just special (and they have no rhyme or reason and build that reason later) or their species all died out.

I'd like to think of it perhaps as a bit like Doctor Who. The Doctor - the main character - is the only one of his kind (time lord) left, because the rest died in a tragic war. So it's not like he was the only one, it's just that the rest died out or if there are some survivors, they're hidden and he can't feel their existence.

Night furies could be similar in the sense that perhaps there were a lot more of them at one point but they all died out. And any survivors could, as said similarly before in this topic, just be spread out and pretty much either isolated or not seen by humans (as Toothless was at the start of the movie).

In any case, the upcoming episode for Riders of Berk should at least answer some questions, as the description of one of the new episodes states Hiccup and Toothless will go searching for other night furies...

Hey guys, after this week's episode titled "Gem of a different color", they will be showing part one of the season finale, and the description says 'Hiccup and Toothless search for other Night Furies'. Part two says 'Hiccup and Toothless must escape Outcast Island after being kidnapped'. Interesting. Looks like they will be focusing on good ole' fashioned Toothless and Hiccup.

This may have been noted beforehand, but I notice that they always seem to speak of Night Furies in the plural, like in the bonus feature that described the strengths and weaknesses of various dragon species.

Also, the new episode sounds cool. I hope 'm able to see it really soon.

On the beginning of the movie, Stoick says "Amy Night Furies?"

I'm not knocking the theory of other NFs dying off, but how would that happen? Apparently no one's even seen them enough to do more than give them a name and label them as 'black death' or whatever. So how could they have died off? Not from hunting surely. Lack of habitat also seems HIGHLY unlikely. I'm at a loss.

I still stick with the theory that they are competitive with eachother. They are very intelligent, like humans, so it makes sense that they would want to be the 'best' of their kind.
So maybe they did stupid things kind of like the muhgal emporers, and it resulted in the demise of the nughtfuries ( for those of you who dont know, the muhgal emporers were afraid of their sons killing them to gain power, so they killed all the strong sons and left only the weak ones to rule, which led to the downfall of the muhgal empire).

My theory is that Toothless, while not being the only one of his kind, IS the only one of his kind in the region (Berk in the books is based on a small Scottish island in the North Sea – albeit in the West, away from the Nordic countries). Assuming the region includes most of the British Isles and Northern Europe, it's likely that Night Furies can live to a very old age – which would be required if the next closest Night Fury is somewhere in the Song Dynasty. This would explain why Hiccup has never seen another Night Fury.

In my head, Night Furies are either:
a) Asexual (as someone mentioned), meaning that they produce eggs and fertilise them when the time is right. Some lizards (assuming dragons are closely related to them) can produce asexually. Or
b) Are fiercely competitive and only mate once in a blue moon. This would require them to travel incredibly long distances (most likely at night, which partly explains the colour of the scales), mate, then return home. The offspring, when old enough, adventure out to either oust their papa or colonise some other part of the globe. It would be interesting to see if a Night Fury could gradually (over a number of years) change its colours to adapt to its surroundings. A pitch-black dragon in the Sahara Desert wouldn't last long.

As for the 'Any Night Furies?' quote – it is likely they had no idea how many Night Furies there were.

I don't know about dragon's changing colours, but Troll Berserker thinks Vikings can! :D

Lol Conay! Silly picture!
And I'm sure the Vikings saw more then one Night Fury during 300 years of war.
