It has been released overseas in some countries (Germany for example) but it didn't do better, unfortunately.
In fact, it may have more success in the countries where it has been pushed back to January.

Most likely, parents tend to just take their kids to any 3D movie so they'll be happy, I wouldn't be surprised if they took them to a 2D one for a change.

However, advertising is a worry here. I haven't seen one ad for it. Not one. Not a trailer on the TV, or anything. Nothing. I wouldn't have known it was out January 1st if I hadn't have looked it up via Google.

I just can't wrap my head around why this film did so lackluster in it's first week. Sure Avatar was huge competition the following week but still I feel like it should have finished stronger. Also I can't really speak for a lack of advertisements, I've seen more coverage for this film than any other (yet at the same time I'm based in New Orleans so coverage is boosted by local channels doing stories on it as well). I think the final nail in the coffin is the the Alvin and Chipmunks movie was able to out place it! A film that doesn't even begin to appear to have any audience other than the very youngest of children.

I prefered the original Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoons with the original creator doing the voice of David Seville. sure, I like Earl palying Seville, but this recent upgrade is pathetic...

I, myself, can't believe what happened with the boxoffice. This is such a classic yet it's a sleeper hit?

I have stated many reasons already...but in any case, I think that if the same film had been released in early 90's, it would have been acclaimed as much as Aladdin, Beauty & Beast and The Lion King had been.
It's such a shame that nowadays, so few people care about excellent films like this :?

I just saw this movie today and honestly... why did they not do better to publicise it???
Usually, I don't like "Princess" movies but since Steet mentioned it here and a few other people said it was good I went for it and watched it and my lord it's good.

It's a serious shame it didn't do better. I hate the fact rubbish 3D movies do better JUST because they're 3D and "awesome". -.-

Well, I don't see much of it on TV, but I did see a buttload of posters in Melbourne Central (city shopping centre) around the 27th. Which was around 3 days before release. -__-

I'm also having trouble seeing this, because the only session times are 10am and 12pm. Twice a day. That's it. Maybe that's why, good lord. I'm only waking at 10. Blaaaaarg.

Actually... this movie seems to have done better than we have been saying lately... according to an article I found, since the movie had made an overall grand total of over $100 million in the US (Apparently opening weekend box offices don't mean everything. It makes sense, really, in my mind. Not everyone who's a fan of children's movies was sure about how it would turn out, but once the people who did see the movie early on spread the word about how good it was, more and more people went to see it later on. A "Late bloomer," as it were.) And, I quote this from the article,

Quote:
The film's apparent success (it made $100m in the US ) has also persuaded Disney to now greenlight at least one new hand-drawn film every two years.

Hey, it's a step forward for 2D animation, isn't it?

BTW, the article I'm talking about is here:

That's great, we'll see Rapunzel 2d then!

I'm still wary of the new Winnie the Pooh movie...

No, Rapunzel is already into production and it's a CGI film (but with a different style from what we're used to)

Well it did cross the 100M$ bar, but Alvin 2 made 200M$ too...
Anyway, I posted a news about that here :

Just thought I'd post here and be all GRRS because the DVD isn't coming out here until the 14th of June. Which is silly, because the DVD was out over in the US much faster compared to when the movie was released.

Typical Disney.

I really loved that movie. Music didn't annoyed me(last time it sometimes does in animated movies).
Nice story, nice music, pretty classic animation. And finally someone died. I have that strange feling that last time cartoons are being TOO censored that no one can even die here.
Funny, sad and touching moments. For me it was really well done movie.
