Personality:
the opposite of his father, shy and calm, Hjalmar was taught by his mother to be a kind and respectable predator, to never make fun of other creatures only because he's supposed to be naturally superior than them; he doesn't believe much in himself and will most likely always search for someone who might help him as he barely try anything by himself, sure that he wouldn't succeed, even if he has enough spirit and strenght to do everything; he's smaller, like his father, than his average breed and this is why he also doesn't feel himself fit.

Like/dislikes:
Hjalmar likes travelling, he can move, he can explore and so he can lear new things about plants, other animals and about the territories he wanders into, making him the perfect guide around; even if he enjoys eating, he doesn't like hunting, he's successful half of the times, only for luck, but he's not good at it because nobody ever taught him how to do it. He doesn't like being seen as a threat without knowing his real intentions and, even if he's always alone, he enjoys company because it reminds him of when he was still with his mother and father.

History:
after the events of Ice Age 1 and the death of Soto, the saber-toothed cats still alive didn't take separate ways but stayed together, only for a matter of survival though. Lenny, Oscar and Zeke joined a bigger pack of saber tigers, trying to go on with their lives. Soon Oscar was exiled as he challenged the actual leader for the leadership but lost. Lenny decided to show his loyalty and he became lead hunter, almost the role that Diego had in Soto's pack. Zeke was still unsure about his current pack position and was tempted to leave many times, considering that, mostly for his appereance, he wasn't well seen by the other cats but when one of the females began to show some interest on him, feeling that he shared as well, he decided to stay. The couple had a single cub, whom they named Hjalmar, upon the mother's desire. Hjalmar was not welcomed in the pack as his mother was one of the lead male's daughter and, even if not the next in line, he still didn't trust Zeke and saw their relationship only as a way of the outsider to take over the pack. Zeke had to accept the leader's challenge but lost. The pack heard and saw his exile but Hjalmar's mother knew that some sabres sent on a hypotetycal hunt were, instead, sent after Zeke, who was killed. The lead saber couldn't let him go alive as for him, what the skinnier one did to his daughter, was an unrespectful act that couldn't be unpunished. 

Due to a harsh winter, the pack was forced to find his preys somewhere else and they ended up doing the same error as Soto's old pack did, even despite Lenny's warnings: they hunted the man's animals. Slowly, one after one, the sabres were taken down, pelts used as clothes. Hjalmar, his mother, few sabres guided by Lenny and the leader were trapped on a gorge and the pack ended to exist. Hjalmar, however, survived. Well hidden on an empty trunk, he wasn't seen. Alone, unable to hunt and with the men still around, the cub padded his way through the snow and took an important decision: leaving to find a safer place. Initially set into the unknown, the stories about his father's older pack were still fresh on his mind, a detail in particular, about a certain Diego who left with a sloth and a mammoth. They could be dead for what Hjalmar knew but he had to try. He knew the names and he knew they originally headed south. He changed path and began his research for Diego and his two friends, still unaware that there was a long journey ahead him.
