Kiara & Kovu: Cousins?

Let's tackle the Kovu/Kiara family relationship when Kovu is Scar's son, shall we?
Alright, despite what the movie says, I would greatly prefer to thing Zira just didn't know Scar was Kovu's father. Why? Well...
Yeah. That. He killed his own brother and then sent vicious beasts after his nephew, a innocent cub. And then he's just going to turn the throne over to someone else's son? Why would anyone think that was a good idea? What was going on at Disney? Did they just not watch the first movie? What exactly happened?
Their answer: Kiara and Kovu were cousins.
My Answer: What.
So, let's jump into the reasons Disney would have received less complaints(from serious fans, not common moviegoers) if they made Scar Kovu's father, than what they did. Throw in a random cub. Make no sense. The 'cousins' excuse make no sense, it might be a decent reason to cut it, but they aren't cousins.
Observe:
Let us assume the following:
Ahadi and Uru were the parents of Mufasa and Taka(Scar)
Kovu's mother and Sarabi are unrelated
Nala and Kovu's mother are unrelated
This means that, as sons of brothers, Kovu and Simba are cousins. Kiara and Kovu are not. Kiara and Kovu are first cousins once removed. See here for details.
In all but six states in the US, it is legal to marry your first cousin once removed.
Furthermore, these are lions. Not humans. Yes, they have human characteristics, but they are still lions. In other words, in real life, which is often all we have to go off of when interpreting these movies, it's not unheard of for siblings to have cubs.
Disney decided that way too many people would freak if they made Scar Kovu's son. I understand them not wanting to keep people away from their movie, but it still annoys me to no end.
Please understand, this isn't saying that Kovu was Scar's son. He wasn't. I'm just pointing out that he could have been, with little problem. My personal theory is that Mheetu was Scar's son, and Kovu's father. That would make them second-cousins, which, in the US, are perfectly alright to marry.
