Fan Characters Reminder

Written by Kirada :

Part of the fun about being a fan site is having the resources we do -- we have a dedicated place, just for the characters we create! But as with everything there is an unnecessary "evil," or something to cause an ache of some kind. In this specific post I'm going to remind you all of a very important point concerning naming your characters.

While we all strive for "unique" and "recognizable," some members have gone as far as to include "not to copy" their character name(s), even if the name is common. While there is no rule regarding this on the website it does take away from the character's profile -- and moderators have grounds to edit it out.

Please, do not put things to the effect of "DO NOT COPY ME" in character profiles. Credit the images, only where applicable.

Unless it's blatant theft, you cannot do anything if another member "copies a name." For the sake of example lets say I make a bay tobiano character named Tommy. Soon after, another character makes a similar bay pinto named Tommy. But I have a character named "Trigger," and while that's exciting I cannot report theft if another member makes a Trigger -- after all, it was a famous horse and on those grounds I cannot "self copyright" its name.

I was asked numerous times to reiterate. Thanks for the welcome, but this is no new position to me, either.

To answer your question, there is no solid rule against it. HOWEVER, it is STRONGLY discouraged. Character biography spaces are NOT to post a bunch of caps-locked information about how a character is "oh, so unique" and is "forbidden to be copied." In my personal opinion, there are no names WORTH copying.

Since it's just a name, any report I get for "stealing" a name is disregarded unless it's a blatant attempt to copy the character. The site is NOT a small community so other people will have similar ideas, so "asking not to copy" is not only a waste a space but also a useless task for someone to try. In essence it would be like me telling people not to steal my legal name and if I encounter someone with it, I attack them Lol! Do you see how mundane that would be? People are too possessive over the LITTLE THINGS regarding their characters and need to focus less on an "individual name" and more on creating an interesting character.

I can understand why people say please dont copy my characters name, especially if theyve gone to all the trouble of finding the perfect name for that character. But I do also understand that you cant forbid other people from using the same name as you, unless you invented that name entirely by yourself.
One question though: Does this mean we cant include a note on our characters pages that politely asks that people dont copy our characters name? Its not forbidding people from using the same name; its just asking that they dont. Or is that pretty much the same thing anyway?

UK posted a fan-news similar some months back: / [...] on_t_fight_news_post/3339.html
But I completely agree with you Kirada; No one can copyright a name. If names were copyrighted, then alot of people in this world today would have very different names and nobody would have the same name. Just think how strange that would be? o_O
Plus, names are names. It's not what makes the character completely unique (It does make the character unique in someway but there's more than the name that makes a character unique.). You need great bio's and creative designs.

Also, welcome to AS staff Kirada. =)
