True Balto versus Animated Balto

Just a small comparison between the true story and the cartoon one :

First of all you must have noticed that the true dog does not really look like the animated one...

True Balto versus the animated Balto

But especially, the true Balto, has never been a wolf dog. It was an ordinary husky, not rejected by people at all. Moreover, the film gives the feeling that there is one sled and that the driver is completely useless. In the reality, several dogs took the head one after another, even if Balto was the one who made it possible to find the way to Nome.

Then, the film does not show that many men and children died before the drug arrived in town, though it is suggested in one of the scenes in the film (coffins). But the film being intended for a young public, this is easily understandable.

Finally, it is wise to notice that if the film had really respected the true story, it would undoubtedly be much less interesting, and I think that the "feeling" of the history was still respected, for example you can take a look at the documentary (if you have a non-region 1 DVD :/) where we can see the true sled arriving in Nome: this scene is almost identical in the film, and it surprised me...

It's not, actually, about "making it more interesting". It's about "dramatic license" for the sake of dramatic license. They want to be able to tell a story uniquely theirs. To write a fictional romance (or even melodrama) and dramatic (or melodramatic) conflict into a story in order to "spice" it up...from their point of view.

Anyone who has read into the real history of the 1925 Nome Serum Run, and all that happened not only leading up to it, but in the years following it, knows that there is plenty enough adventure, drama, conflict and even a touch of melodrama to have made a very interesting and compelling story on film. Even in a condensed version which is all too common with Hollywood (in order to make it digestible for the average audience, which has a moderate I.Q. and very low attention span, and expects lots of special effects and minimal dialogue).

The key problem with this movie will ALWAYS be that it was promoted (even on the cover of the DVD and VHS) as "the true story of an American hero". It's blatantly erroneous.

Any film that is based on a real life event or book is bound to be changed in one way or another. As for Balto, Amblin stripped the story down to just "Nome was struck by a deadly disease called Diphtheria, and a dog named Balto saved it." Everything else was thrown out the window. I understand that Amblin had to modify the story to make it work in a film, but I think they could have kept some key dogs and people in it. I don't hate the film by any means, I'm just expressing my thoughts. :P - Ignore this stupid emote.

In every true story thier is always something changed to seemingly make stories more interesting but either way, both the movie and true story are both inspirational. interesting though.

I know I asked at least one question about that (I posted two multi-part questions, which Simon responded to). But as you can imagine, they've not been particularly forthcoming with official answers about that.

I guess I just don't understand why it was needed, did anyone ask about that in interviews? I'm actually now a little curious about why they went ahead with the "half-breed" plot?
I can more understand the centralization and perhaps undue over-glorification of Balto for the sake of making a relatable and lovable protagonist get his due at the end. (I mean portraying Balto as the hero who basically single handedly saved nome in the movie)

But I'd like to know why they added the wolves and wolf bloodline into the story..?

Jotown, don't over-react or jump to conclusions about what I said about your spelling and grammar. I wasn't attacking you. I was offering a calmly-worded suggestion. You need to learn the difference if you are going to navigate a social network like this one.

And, as Mighty said, whining about the situation will only cause more problems. Not solve any.

Your own interpretation of the movie, Eska, makes a lot of sense, and was very well-worded. But it also reveals the common problem inherent in Hollywood's penchant for over-use of "dramatic license" to produce a movie "based upon a true story" (and, as we all know, the packaging of the Balto movie actually says "the true story of an American hero", which makes a direct and egregiously-false statement that the events in the movie are, actually, the true story itself).

Thank you for your perspective on that.

"I think, instead of using the word "disappointed", using surprised seems more sensible. To say that one is disappointed with Balto being a purebred siberian husky comes off as negative and ridiculous to me."

I was disappointed and a little surprised. But definitely disappointed that the movie portrayal wasn't what I thought it was.
So it was more than just surprise for me, I wanted to movie to be true I guess.

No one is asking you to be "perfect", but by the 5th grade you should know how to write a grammatically correct sentence.
