Personality:

Herla was known under the Great Prince as a strong and sturdy buck, but his true lengths only would show once Trar took command. Herla showed himself extremely loyal, just under Huckleberry in rank. Herla was known very well as an affable buck, who was not disliked by most does, far unlike nearly all the rest of Trar’s guard, for it seemed most the herd’s bucks had gotten far too arrogant in their rank and became very forceful, but Herla had not changed. He refused to, knowing very well that his position would rely on not his strength, but his diplomacy. Unlike most other high-ranked bucks, Herla hadn’t the same strength of most of them, as they were all very exceptionally sized bucks. Trar had chosen Herla for a strong loyalty that would temper the rash actions of others.

However, despite being a very nice buck, Herla was violently loyal to Trar and killed three bucks in order to put down an impending rebellion.

All the same, many bucks like Herla, and he is a very sociable one. He is also known to be very serious and does not take horseplay very well.

He has been known to have taken does in his harem and never mating with them, as he only took them to keep them away from more vile bucks.

History:

Born in the Prince’s herd, about a year before Bambi, Herla was named for the legends of the great Red Deer, larger than any other deer they knew. Greater in size even than the caribou of legend. However when he was six months old, Herla was far smaller than most bucks his age. He was sickly and not very strong.

He was always bullied, and he hated it. Herla never liked being around others, but dealt with it.

But at a year old, that was when Herla hit his rowth spurt. He shot above most bucks, his muscles hardening suddenly. Many bucks felt a sudden respect for him, as Herla was a very respectable buck. However, some still were too proud to admit it, and those were the ones who found themselves in a fight with him, and often lost.

Eventually, Herla grew into a fine adult buck. The rut came that year, the very same year that the Prince would fall to Trar.

But before that, Herla witnessed something he could not bear.

A strong buck had forced himself upon his doe, and now hurt her and she seemed very much terrified he may hurt her.

And so, Herla attacked him. He leaped upon the buck, goring him mercilessly in the side and chasing him away from the doe before turning to her. He asked, “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” the doe murmured. “Thank you.”

“Don’t,” Herla replied immediately. “You should not have to. Any buck should be willing to protect a doe.”

He turned, and raising his head, proclaimed, “and I vow by my honor, I shall never see this occur again.”

And he did not. As soon as Trar took over, he went first to Herla to assure that at least some of the does would support him.

Herla grew soon into an extreme loyalty, and the next rut, as the high ranks of Trar’s guard chose their does, Herla made a point to pick out the very youngest does: The ones who had matured far too soon and had not even lost their spots, for he knew there were low, cruel bucks who desired them. However, once their times came, he absolutely refused to step away from their sides, even though he refused to mate with them. Instead he would chase off any buck who dared even suggest they might want them.

These are the actions which gained Herla much respect amongst the does.

However later in the rut, bucks had gotten angery. They planned a rebellion against Trar, but the structure was very weak. The result was a few bucks in charge and several blind followers. Somehow the plan was leaked and Herla caught wind of it, and upon alerting Huckleberry and Nacht briefly, he took it upon himself to deal with the rebellion, knowing that these things could not even be allowed to be thought of. So immediately, rather foolishly, the buck burst upon the leaders’ meeting, confronting them alone.

He immediately killed one of them, upon his first blow to him caught him in the throat.

However, he lost the element of surprise with that first attack. The other two immediately fell upon him, and Herla managed to escape several serious injuries, but took several bites to the ear and two deep cuts to the throat.

He staggered back to the main meeting place of Trar and his Captains, and immediately they stood in shock. He looked awful. “What have you done?” cried Faline, one of Nacht’s does.

Slowly Herla rose his head, though his neck still stayed low. “I… have put down a rebellion…” He swallowed and rose his neck and tried to appear strong, though he had lost much blood. “I have protected Trar’s position of honor in this herd.”

This was the very thing that Nacht thought of, for it impressed him that the buck was so loyal and brave, when he chose Herla as one of Faline’s guards. Herla grew very close to the doe, however, and very close to the other guards.

He soon betrayed all he had lived for and nearly died for: He arranged a plan and escaped the herd alongside Faline.

He had the chance to start over.
