I have an HD TV but no Blurays. I think the DVDs look enough nice and I'm still not "amazed" by the Bluray videos I can see in stores.
Although it depends on your TV, some does real good upscaling, others do not.

In any case, if you only own the VHS, I REALLY recommend to get the DVD (especially if you can find it cheap)

But I would definitely like a Bluray edition for Balto. I would be sure to get a Bluray player if it happened. But it seems VERY unlikely for now.

^I think I'll have to give in in buying those :( How is the 5.1 surround in there? Does it set to todays standards of 5.1 surround sound? It may not be hi-def sound but it's still enjoyable.

I'm just really nit picky with the aspect ratio since it's not in widescreen, especially since we moved from a 4:3 tv to a widescreen HDTV. So was it the Brazilian version that had widescreen...

That's why I enjoy watching my laserdisc version of Balto. The aspect ratio looks so much better. I'd be totally down for a wide screen DVD version with 5.1 surround :D

For now, only a full-HD television would benefit of a blue-ray, which means 1080p and over 42".

I too would buy a blue-ray disk if it came out, and I'm sure american fans would appreciate the 16:9 standard.

Well it has been repeated multiple times already, but the non-US DVD (which means, the DVD released everywhere except from the USA / region 1) DOES have widescreen. And the english track is in 5.1.

Hmmm...Well that begs the question then. Why did America get the short straw and get the crappy version of the DVD when every other region/country get higher quality video, audio, and added features?

If that includes Asia then I'm gonna import the one from China. The official legal Hong Kong release of course. And I have no idea why but it's a question I can be mad about. It's not fair ugh.

The great mistery of Universal... We will never know.

China uses a different kind of DVD, it wouldn't work on American DVD players.

Maybe because it was the first version and the others were released later?
And also because at the time it was released (2001/2002) they believed most americans liked 4/3 better than 16/9 (which was a VERY short sighted thing to do)

Depends on the DVD players, some are multi-regions.
Or you can just play your DVDs using VLC on your computer, they work pretty fine (that's what I do with the Talespin dvds, although I can't read one specific dvd though...I had to rip it to be able to read it. But that's probably a specific problem)

Really? I didn't know that multi-regions DVD players existed... Never even heard of them. Blah, I must keep myself up to date better!

O ya I'm aware of the region code locks :) I have tricks up my sleeve to make another copy to make it region all ;) it's no problem. heck you can look it up on the net. But i don't share these and let people burn my copy of course. It's also a great excuse to make a back up copy, one for viewing and one for sake-keeping keeps (that being the original copy).

Actually I have read that most home DVD players can be unlocked, but there's something specific to be done (look on the web for more info - I actually don't own any DVD player save for my PC one so I can't help more)

Ok this is the third time in a row I came back here every year and nothing has happened (not that I expected anything to - not to sound hopeless). I'd love to have this movie before Christmas... better yet, the soundtrack CD. It's so flippin' hard to find. amazon is expensive. And that's without shipping. O those rare soundtracks...

From what I have seen in the past years, I'm getting quite hopless too about it. There aren't enough signatures for the petition, even if Balto Source strongly advertises it and this comunity is very active.
