New teaser - Illumination invites us to "Sing"

While the fine folks at Illumination Entertainment prepare the release of The Secret Life of Pets, more animated features have been in the works in the company’s Santa Monica and Paris studios including Despicable Me 3 for 2017, and one for this year’s Christmas. The latter is simply known as Sing, which has just been given a teaser trailer for us to get a taste of what’s to come.

Just like The Secret Life of Pets, this one also involves cartoon animals. But instead, they are the anthropomorphic kind that are similar to Disney’s Zootopia. The premise of the movie revolves around Buster the koala (voiced by Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey) who decides to host a big singing competition in order to save his failing theatre. Think of it as American Idol with animals. Other cast members signed up include Reese Witherspoon (Monsters vs. Aliens), John C. Reilly (Wreck-it-Ralph), and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.

Sing will serve as the first venture into animation for director/writer Garth Jennings, who is known for directing the 2005 comedy film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as plenty of music videos. Universal Pictures will release the animated musical in North American theatres just in time for Christmas on December 21, 2016.

Karlamon’s thoughts:
With Illumination’s third original animated creation (excluding Hop), Sing has rather caught my curious interest, especially with Garth Jennings being an unlikely choice as director. While I don’t consider the animal designs to be as appealing as Zootopia (though still fine as they are), the idea of taking something commonly found on reality television and making it into a movie does seem like a smart idea. From the teaser, it does look like the typical animated animal comedy. But the charm of the characters, use of songs, and the constant guessing of the winner could make this quiet memorable. We’ll have to wait and see if the execution holds up though.
