What's this?

This project consists in proposing yourself to make Source sites similar to the ones you already know : Balto Source, The Lion King Source..., applying the same formula to other films/series.

Because I don't have time to do everything myself, and I'm not a fan of every film/series that exists, I have made a quite simple interface to make the sites. So (almost) anyone can help!

What should I do?

If you're interested in helping, just submit an entry to this contest.

Two possibilities : either you're good at writing, or you're good at designing (or both!)

So, you can submit either a text or a picture, or both.

What kind of text can I submit?

Please submit a short description of the film / series, and/or a description of one character (to test your writing skills).

Write your text into a regular document file (any format you want : .doc, .txt, .odt ...)

Example : /talespin/en/info_general/&id_film=9

Some advices :

- You must write these texts ENTIRELY YOURSELF!!! No copy/paste from another website such as Wikipedia will be allowed! I want ORIGINAL content, don't submit anything if you don't want to make efforts! 
 
- Of course, a good level of grammar / spelling will be required.

What kind of picture can I submit?

You can submit a picture of a design you have created, for a possible new Source site.

And this is what I have obtained when I created the one for Talespin Source (which took me around 10 hours to make - yes, making a good style DOES take time) :

If you'd like to submit a design, just send a picture of your design. You can use any software you want to make it (Photoshop, Gimp, Photofiltre...)
 
It must be "based" on the model I have given above. (meaning that the elements should be at the same place and with the same dimensions) You must only provide a picture.
 
I will only select members who can make styles "on par" with the current sites styles! Quality over quantity!

Some advices :

- Use a "professional" picture editing software, such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or The Gimp. Why? Especially because these have possibility to manipulate layers, which are extremely important.

- Respect the model given (there are some levels of "freedom", although I will explain more precisely later - for now, just try to globally stick to the model...)

- Respect the sizes : width especially - you can expand heights if you want.

- Keep your "working files" (PSD files for Photoshop, for example) : if you get chosen, the style you submitted may be effectively used for the site that will be created. But it may have to be modified, so keep everything you used to make it!

 

Why should I do this?

The entries submitted will help to choose members who will get permissions to making the sites.

I have set up a very far deadline, but I will choose members progressively, when I think you are up to the job.

What types of sites can I suggest?

In the past, I suggested doing only traditional animated films. Then, I progressively accepted CGI films and modern animated films.

I am now opening the possibility to make new sites of any film or series you'd like, as long as it's animated!

So, anything from western to japanese (Dragon Ball, Naruto...) to european (Asterix, Tintin ...) can be accepted, as well as any form of animation (claymation / stop motion, computer generated, drawings).

Only one thing, steet? Then here's my response: point-for-point: You've kept me ground under the proverbial heel of threat of banning because you don't like me having an opinion that I'm willing to express, and because I was unwilling to tolerate egomania in certain people. And this site is overloaded with egomaniacs, who have effectively driven away all of the quality people who used to make this site the good thing it once was. I'm "a terrible member"? XD You've been a terrible webmaster, and that sentiment is hardly unique to me. The veritable desert of inactivity that is evident all over this site (in every shoutbox, on every part of the forum except those half-finished role-plays that are generally so poor in quality) is evidence enough of that. And now you want to add more sections that will probably never see much of any activity at all (regardless of any statistics that you pull from your own server). You've driven away, or kept gagged, any member who might actually be able to help resurrect this site simply because you can't let go of childish grudges, or assign staffers who are not children (either in reality or by personality...but with a few exceptions). I'm hardly surprised to see you respond this way. And it just proves that you haven't the maturity to let go of your bitterness over Togo and other issues that I've given YOU many opportunities to do. That's a real shame. What's next? A ban against me because I said something you cannot deal with? Or a deletion of this comment for the same reason? This could have easily gone differently, had you simply opened up, even PRIVATELY between us (if you were worried about losing face over this ), and said "hey - let's just do a clean slate sort of thing, and work together to make AS something again. Be a part of it, JC". Instead, it's the same old childish garbage. Tsk.

JC => I only have one thing to say : you've been given MANY chances already, and it failed everytime. I'm not saying you're not a good asset when it comes to building site content; but you're terrible as a member. I don't think you'd accept to build a site and then not participate in its life as member on that site, which is why I'm not very willing to give it a try. It's not at all because of your writing skills.

Does anybody have a recommendation of someone whom I can ask to do the artwork/layout, who can draw human figures and also in an anime style? I will need someone skilled at both... ...people willing to get involved, who aren't expecting paid commissions in order to do it, and whose artwork would be good enough to serve for a layout design. It will need to be quality work. And I can just imagine how difficult it will be to convince a GOOD artist to take this on...

Well Nakou, you don't seem honestly committed to it, because I still sense a preconception and judgemental viewpoint on your part. And honestly, you don't know the history of how things played out. Trust is built by taking chances. You don't seem very willing to take those without severely limiting things. So again, while I happily release this page to return to the discussions at hand (and had no intentions of holding it prisoner, actually), I get the sense, from your response, that PM discussions would be of negligible benefit at best. My apologies to the rest for the distraction. However, the ultimate intent was to TRY to express frustration with the stonewalling by the webmaster himself...because I did try to reach out to him privately, through a third party on staff, before I even knew about this. The feedback I got was that there was no response from him after a lengthy wait, and there would likely never be, and that I should resign myself to that fact. I tried.

Steet, would you allow a Ginga Source? The whole series including 3 main mangas, and many spin offs have been adapted to two animes so far, but there are some rather violent scenes. I know you allowed Watership Down, but I want to make sure if Ginga would be okay too.

I never say I was supposed to approve anything, I don't see where you've imagined it, I'm just sharing my experience as I'm more present than Steet. You give your opinion, I don't see why I shouldn't I appreciate the work of others. What I was saying about playing the game, is that it's the main principle of a project / contest, you know. Not just asking and complaining because you've lost your rights. I won't draw this out here. I don't mean to disrespect anyone IN here. However, if you are serious about what you said, Nakou, then I invite you to talk with me via Skype. My Skype name is the same as my member name here. Make the contact, and we can talk. Since I cannot get steet to seriously talk to me. Let's see how serious you are about this. I think I've done all I can to demonstrate, many times, how serious I am. Some staffers know that. Others refuse to acknowledge it. *I* want to be a contributor again. A couple of watermark events over the fall of last year made it possible for that to happen, and for some real good stuff to happen here. But I've reached out as much as I can, and I won't keep doing it if all I get is immediate bans and slaps in the face every time I try. Please, everyone else, return to the discussions about this project, and the best of luck with your projects. I really hope they succeed. I'll take it off this page. MAYBE, if steet will LET me, I can submit a different project (another I suggested a couple of years ago), since there is probably no point in my trying to get back onto the Secret of NIMH project at this point.

Nakou: Thank you for replying. Now, an answer (which I assumed was obvious from my admittedly long post, but I shall clarify). Pardon the long reply please: I did "prove" it. So did Juuchan17. Again, I don't presume to speak for her (she's quite capable of speaking on her own behalf), but I submitted work back when that particular source was approved for development by steet, and so did she. I did the research, and poured not only through the movie, to make sure of key points and so forth, but I also poured through the book. AND I sat through the painful experience of the sequel as well. Similarly, I don't believe I ever suggested that I want this to be about me, and me alone. I said, quite clearly, that Draco was the first to suggest it (and I provided evidence of that fact), and that I and Juuchan17 did so subsequently. We had first right to that work, and while Draco didn't (as I recall) end up on the builders list, certainly Juuchan17 and I did. And then others were added without discussing it with either of us. And those people started changing things, not communicating with us, and eventually nudging the two of us out. That is the problem I have with this. I was under the understanding that this project was steet's, and that it was under his jurisdiction and supervision. Where, exactly, do you come into play on this? I see nothing indicating anyone was supposed to submit material to you for approval. "Work for a better future". I would love to do that. I want nothing MORE than to be a positive contributor. I have tried, and I have made many efforts, through friendly moderators and by myself, to TRY to talk with steet and reason with him. I have tried for YEARS to get steet to let go of his grudge and allow me to contribute without any rush to judgement, deleting of posts, and knee-jerk bans. The results have been negligible at best. And it requires efforts on BOTH sides, Nakou. Being gang-rushed and banned because one member and a couple of friends don't like someone personally is a ridiculous reason to be banned. Perhaps the French staffers need to show a little clemency and stop trying to "punish" me, and keep me ground under some proverbial heel, simply because I happen to be outspoken, and because I have a skill with my own language which intimidates certain people here. Which it shouldn't. "Leave the past where it is?" That is a statement I've made to steet SEVERAL times in the past few years. And yet, he still behaves as though he did the moment he formed his opinions of me. He won't talk to me, and when he does, he patronizes and talks down to me. That's disrespectful and it does nothing but keep the conflict going. It's a two-way street, Nakou. You want to see reconciliation? I do too. I have tried. I have gotten more from some of his staffers, and others who are (or were) on this site than I ever got from him. Or you. Release me from the extant prejudices and being backed into a corner (for fear of being banned over the most ridiculous and presumptuous things), and steet and his other staffers will find me to be a supportive and avid contributor (as steet himself KNOWS from the past, before all the nonsense began). I don't blame him for feeling the way he does (as I said, it's human after all), what I want to say is that he truly should leave the past where it is, and show his work if he wants to have a chance to be added as a site builder. Many people ask to be added, but the contest is here for that: to show how motivated you are! People ask, rights are given, and then nothing. The contest is to show results and interest. I'm not saying JC is a troll nor that you are one, that's not the subject. I just wish he could stop talking about the past and concentrate about the future. If JC can't do that, I also understand why Steet doesn't want to give him a chance. Trust in someone isn't easy, you can't give your trust just because someone ask it. And I don't doubt he made good things by the past, I've already heard about it. But past and present are different. I think he should play the game as others do, that would be unfair otherwise. Finally, I think that if he's still seen as a troll, it's because he doesn't try to take a new start: he's always talking about the past as just a victim. New members just don't care about it, and old members already have their opinion that just words accusing Steet won't especially change. But I'm sure everyone would be glad to know a JC who doesn't try to justify and complain, but work on the source only.

I just want to say that he shouldn't have to "show (prove)" that he's someone great. He's done plenty enough in the past to prove that, it's just that people refuse to see it. He's always viewed as some sort of troll who wants to cause trouble among users here, and that's completely false. There have been people here who have actually trolled this site, and they are treated far better than someone who hasn't trolled even once. I know what's like to be hurt by people on this site. Once you gone though so much, it's hard to participate as normal without feeling like someone is going to get on your case over anything. I don't believe I have it as bad as JC, but I still feel like I have to walk on egg shells. (my comment itself is an example). You can't really blame him for feeling like the way he does.

Instead of making a huge speech saying how much you're a victim, JC, and complaining about Steet actions (which I have approved for what I've seen, though we all have different point of views and we all make mistakes - we are humans after all...), you should play the game as everyone does, and send a work in the contest: make an example of informations or designs. Just don't say "I want it", prove it with concrete things. Plus, it's not because you're the first that you're the only one : many people love that movie, the most important is to see it will appear, no matter who make it. Oh, I know you'll say I don't understand the issue and all that stuff. I just have pleasure looking at what the participants sent here, and I don't see your work, where is it? Steet said you were good with sharing informations, show this to the new Animation Source, instead of complaining always and always about the former one. Of course we can understand you've been hurted, but seriously: it's in the past! You've got a second chance, seize it! Show you're someone great, and perhaps you'll have your chance. I don't want to create a drama or to hurt you by replying - I'm just tired to see you brew the past : work for a better future!

I'm sorry to saddle everyone else with this, but... Secret of NIMH Source was first recommended by Draco, myself and Juuchan17 (separately). I have conclusive proof of that in mine and Draco's case anyway: /board/post921899.html#p921899 /board/post1216382.html#p1216382 And even though, for a time, I and Juuchan17 were added to the builders list for it, a few years or so ago, others were added who had no part in the original suggestions, and basically muscled out the rest of us. Or took things in their own direction without communicating with us, and it was wrong. I am not speaking for Juuchan17 or Draco, and won't presume to know how they still feel about this, if they feel anything about it at all. But I still have feelings about it. Without belaboring the issue of how the webmaster has nursed years of a grudge at me over some perceived view of me being a "troll", in spite of years of my trying to demonstrate and prove that I have TRIED and WANTED to help and participate, which efforts were confounded by years of flame wars, I made a request, through a moderator recently, to be reinstated onto the Secret of NIMH Source project. Which has been consistently ignored. It's pretty apparent why. And still, there are people on the project who had no hand in the original requests made, and at least one of whom who completely over-wrote the initial efforts and design plans made by Juuchan17 and myself. As I noted in my post, linked above, I've known this movie since I was a teenager, and the book it was based upon since I was a CHILD. And it has always been dear to me. It was one of my most favorite books. I've even read the sequel books. To be shut out, or ignored, and to have all my original layout work (and Juuchan's) run roughshod over, is really hurtful. We wanted to be a part of this. I certainly know *I* wanted to be a part of this. I wonder if anyone else understands how infuriating it is to have a webmaster who actively works to ignore your offers of help, your requests for assistance, and keeps you stonewalled over some petty old grudge. I want to help. I want to participate. I have wanted to for YEARS now, and not just with this. It would be nice if, for once, the webmaster would let go of his prejudices against me and instead, for a change, lets me do just that.

xpennydisneyloverx => Yeah, the new design is better. But it still needs some work. The characters in background are too visible, there are yellow/green artefacts around the banner, the menu entries seem to have been cut "by hand" and are very edgy... Keep improving it! You're on the right path.

I find it truly better for my part! I'm glad you take my comment so well and improve the design of your site =D! The desire to do always better is the sign you really want to work on it, I like to see this motivation! I love the banner and the hedge texture, and I hope you see the progress between this one and the previous too ^-^ And by the way, it's a really good choice - Over the Hedge is a really fun movie! So now I just have to say : good luck for the contest! =) EDIT: Oh, just one more idea: for the "source" on the banner, you could perhaps add some shadows behind, to closely reproduce the "Over the Hedge", but that's just a suggestion, I don't think it is important to change The scoobydoo source design reproduces well the colors of the movie but I would give the same advice - the colors are a bit agressive to the eyes ^^' And by the way Steet, I'm sorry if I've repeated what you've said earlier, I haven't seen it

Responding to the feedback of my first submission, I've submitted my second version of my Over the Hedge Source design with some significant changes. For the banner, it now has a background, and MightyBalto1925 was kind enough to remove the white around the characters for me. I've rearranged the site colours with some gradients so its both easier on the eyes, and fits the movie's tone better. Also used a different site background image, and have made a hedge texture which I got from a promotional image for the OTH video game, and have incorporated that to the site content header and the site menu background. If there is anything more that I need to work on, you're welcome to inform me and I'll see what I can do about it
