History

Matari was born to the king and queen of the Southern Pride. His early life was very comfortable and he had plenty of friends and family to spend time with. Because he was the eldest and only offspring of his parents, Matari was made the crown prince of his pride.

Unfortunately, as Matari got older, he started to notice how coldly he would be treated by his father. He also noticed that he would be more harshly punished each time he got into some mischief. Over time, Matari began to hate his father, as well as hating his destined path as future king.

One day, Matari met Subira, who, unknowingly, would be betrothed to him and become queen. They hit it off and became good friends. Subira also was a good distraction from his father's punishments.

When Matari entered his teen years and learned of his betrothal with Subira, he began to have feelings for her. He would always try his best to impress her and brought her gifts from time to time. However, Matari could always see that Subira only ever saw him as a good friend, which made him upset that she was being pushed into something she didn't want, but there was nothing they could do to stop it.

As they became adults, Matari and Subira were married and made the rulers of the Southern Pride. Around this time, Matari had started to deal with anxiety. Subira expressed her wish of having cubs, but he refused, fearing he would become his father towards his cubs. However, later on, Subira had fallen pregnant, which gave Matari mixed emotions. He was scared, which often came off as anger. Fortunately, when Subira gave birth to two sons, Matari felt nothing but love for his cubs. His eldest son, Taji, was made crown prince of the Southern Pride.

When his cubs became older, Matari didn't spend too much time with them, still fearing his father's temper was inside him somewhere. Unfortunately, he began to snap on his cubs from time to time, which prompted Subira to confront him. Their fight ended terribly, with Subira breaking down in fear and Matari walking away ashamed of himself.

When the cubs were adults, Matari had Taji betrothed to a pride lioness, but later learned that Taji had been having an affair with another lioness from the Pride Lands. Matari tried to carry on with his son's marriage, which led to a declaration from Taji that he would not be assuming the throne and that he had cubs of his own. Knowing that his other son would never be ready to assume the throne due to a lack of training, Matari remained king and made Taji's son, Mheetu, the new crown prince, as well as betrothing Taji's daughter, Nala, to the Pride Lands' prince, Simba, for the benefit of a pride union.

One day, news had been recieved that the Pride Lands' king, Mufasa, and the prince, Simba, had been lost to a tragic accident. This prompted Taji to travel to the Pride Lands' to check on his family. This would have been the last time Matari saw his son, Taji.

Later on, a strange young lion appeared in the Southern Pride, looking for a place to stay. Matari was suspicious at first, but then learned that this lion was Mheetu, his grandson. Matari, along with his remaining son, trained Mheetu to become the next king of the Southern Pride.

Unfortunately, Matari soon became very ill and would eventually pass away, not long after Simba and Nala's coronation.

Relation to The Lion King

Matari is the king of the Southern Pride, which is south of the Pride Lands. His son, Taji, would meet Sarafina and become the father of Nala and Mheetu, making him their paternal grandfather.
