History: Oatis and Barley were born in the Lakota Indian camp. Looking so alike, they were considered brother and sister.
They were owned by two warriors who, in a Cavalry raid, were riding them to flee a band of pursueing soldiers. They were ridden up a moutain-side until the trail became difficult for them, so the Lakota dismounted to climb the rest of the way on foot. Oatis and Barley were taken away to the Cavalry Fort as prizes, which were soon regreted, as Oatis was undersized and therefore not capable of carrying a full grown soldier; Barley was dispised for her funny build and looks. The Colonal disapproved of them.
They were given the job of being pack-horses. Oatis experienced many small battles against the Lakota. When on a war trail at one camp he met a dun wild horse called Gower, who he admired. Gower was the only stallion in the cavalry who he never teased.
Two months later, and Oatis was sent back to the Fort after recieving small arrow wound in his side. The Cavalry considered putting him down, but then found that he had formed a close bond with a Captain's purebred mare mount, called Maisy who apparently showed signs of distress and went off her food whenever Oatis was away. Oatis was spared his life.
Months later, the Lakota tribe waged war against the Cavalry. In the thick of the battle, Oatis, Maisy and Barley were three of the many horses freed.
