Who was a wolf in Balto's family?

Date : July 23, 2015

Category : Film questions

Question :

Balto is half wolf and half dog. He doesn't know who he is. But I just want to ask. Balto's wolf side is from his father or mother? Who was a wolf? Balto's mother or father?

Best answer :
Here is Simon's reply:

"I always kinda assumed that Balto's father was a wolf, and that his mother had been a working sled dog. (There's probably a Romeo and Juliet-style prequel in that.) But we never state that for certain."

"Simon mentioned only that his mother worked as a sled dog, and that the story was in the style of "Romeo and Juliet" (I hope they do not kill each other, while leaving her only child alone), and Boris found Balto as an outcast puppy."

Not so. What Simon, in fact, actually said was: "I always kinda assumed that Balto's father was a wolf, and that his mother had been a working sled dog. (There's probably a Romeo and Juliet-style prequel in that.) But we never state that for certain."

Which means, without a doubt, that this was only how he, personally, liked to imagine it. That doesn't make it official. We have to remember that. It's nothing more than his own interpretation for his own benefit, and sharing what he would like to imagine it to be. But he made it clear that they never stated that with any certainty (in fact, they never actually stated it at all in the first movie, which is the only one Simon worked on).

I never ever took this into consideration, but now that I look at it I may be rewriting some characters. I love this idea.
Marroah>If you'd like to continue I'd be happy to help, I may possibly be able to write some music as well. If you want, PM me about it.

Eska,
I am a very long time (up to a question and answer from Simon Wells) was planning to make a short film without words with this storyline, a prequel. I have a very old design (it for many years, it's rather rough and somewhat schematic). Oddly enough, but I always felt like that so be it. Only 3 problems:

1. Unfortunately, I do not know their names (they are not known). If the appearance of the characters can be found by looking at the exterior of Balto (fur color, eyes, ears), the names will be difficulties. Personally, I have always been thinking of names such as Scarlett and Elsa (for Balto's mom) and Lobo (wolf-father).

2. Music. I am not talented in writing music (although I have a sense of taste and quite good at it). I can take excerpts from the old soundtrack to "The Lion King", written by Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone.

3. The integrity of the story. Simon mentioned only that his mother worked as a sled dog, and that the story was in the style of "Romeo and Juliet" (I hope they do not kill each other, while leaving her only child alone), and Boris found Balto as an outcast puppy. Designated a lot of imagination here, but I'll try not to write unnecessary cruelty or strong dramatic moments.

And it's very hard (I saw how Eduardo created The madness of king Scar).

Oh wow! What an interesting way to look at that! I wonder how that prequel would have gone....

Well the one advantage, for folks who prefer it that way, is that he did indeed leave it pretty much open to interpretation. And that's okay too. I personally don't have a problem with Aniu as Balto's mother. I just hate that the mystery of Balto's father was never resolved in any of the movies.

Still, I'm not remiss to seeing people lay out parental alternatives for the character.

I realize that, but still, it's good to know that the original movie was meant to solve this differently. The white wolf was not Balto's mother and Balto's mother was probably not meant to be a wolf.
I personally think it makes more sense that his mother was a dog, it explains better how he ended up being known in the town.

Note to all: Simon isn't committing either way. He's just telling you what he assumed based upon his own opinion. He clearly indicated that this is an open door, that they never officially stated it.

A situation which was resolved in the canon, via the sequels (maligned though they often are). As Makoza said to Marroah in another answered question, the two sequels, having been produced by Universal as material of the Balto storyline, are official...canon.
