Lol--short, sweet, and to the point! The song didn't do all that much for me, either, to be perfectly honest...nor do I find it particularly memorable. It was,...all right. Not bad. As a humongous fan of musicals, I appreciate the move to include a song performed by a character at all. :D

The song wasn't that bad, but I liked the melody and background music more than the lyrics.

Yeah, it well relates to Scotty Mccreery, "The Trouble With Girls". Great melody, laking lyrics.

I'm no music critic, but I liked the song.

A year after the last post, DT?

I guess, if I am to keep on topic, I'll say that I HATED the song. And I thought it was a terrible misuse of the character. Of course, I absolutely despise musical numbers or even character-generated songs in any movie. Animated or otherwise. Pretty much all the great classics don't have them (the animated ones anyway). Turning animated movies into musicals is a terrible thing.

Touche; I suppose I am a bit late to the party.

In response on the actual topic, I think we may have discussed this particular matter before. However, in case that's not so, I'll say that while your point has merit - there aren't many classic animated musicals (though you forgot The Lion King, and I could list a few others which, if not classics as such, are still pretty darn good), that doesn't necessarily mean that an animated musical cannot be a good movie in its own right. After all, who likes a movie that tries too hard to be like every other movie out there?

I personally don't think the song (or musical numbers in general) was necessary to explain the point to Balto. I think just having a brief scene of Balto explaining his feelings to Jenna would have been better.

That I agree with. While I did like the song itself strictly on its own merits, I do concede that the movie didn't need it - or necessarily benefit from it. I still liked it.

We did actually talk about this before. lol I remember that distinctly. And no harm, no foul. Rehashing it isn't a problem for me, as I suspect it isn't for you.

When I think of "classics", I think of movies made before 1990. Before I started (personally) into young adulthood. And especially movies from my childhood, and long before (so that would be the 1970s and prior). I cannot think of any movies, with perhaps a few exceptions, that had singing in them. And, in those cases, at least it wasn't like having to sit through some stupid Broadway musical number (even some dopey musical solo). I think back as far as the 1930s and 40s for great classics.

Either way, the whole concept of a story is ruined (or at least adversely affected), for me, by a character breaking into song...regardless of whether or not it is sad, happy, angry, or some idiotic musical extravaganza.

From what I've gathered, there is an official definition of what is and is not a classic (at least for books, and I would assume the rules are similar for movies), and how old it is only covers half of the equation. Viewing audience covers the other half, and I daresay that at least some movies with musical numbers can manage that (as mentioned before, The Lion King comes to mind).

Your gripe with musical numbers is, admittedly, not completely unfounded, though I will be honest and say I think you're using too wide a brush. Still, you have every right to your opinion when all's said. As you know, I'm more of a lyrics person when it comes to songs; I'd rather see a good song badly sung than a bad song well sung *coughLetItGocough*

I'm not a fan of musical numbers neither, but the song didn't really bother me. We see Jenna who starts singing then we have some touching flashbacks to a fitting song. This is nothing like Disney's animated movie where characters suddenly start singing and dancing. I reminded me more of background songs in Spirit movie which I liked a lot.
