In the dog-eat-dog world of super villains, it can be very difficult to stay relevant and, preferably, on top of the heap.  One villain is always trying to best another in executing the perfect crime, with the hope of leaving their arch enemies (and all those lesser toadies) in the dust.  In 2010's Despicable Me, supervillain Gru is considered the best there is.  That is, until he learns that another supervillain, the up-and-coming young ultra-nerd who calls himself "Vector", has managed to steal the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is getting all sorts of media attention!  Gru now faces ridicule from his own mother as well as the prospect of being knocked off of his supervillain pedestal. 

In an attempt to upstage Vector, Gru hatches a new plan: to steal the moon!  But first he's going to need to acquire a powerful shrink-ray gun in order to bring the moon down to a manageable size.  Utilizing the assistance of his loveable, naughty, and often bumbling minions, and his aged assistant, the evil scientist known as Doctor Nefario, he sets his plan in motion.  At every turn, however, he is thwarted by Vector, who manages to steal the shrink-ray gun right out from under him.  That is, until three little orphan girls show up on his doorstep one day selling cookies, giving Gru a sinister idea to get the shrink-ray gun back and complete his evil plan!

In spite of himself, and the best efforts of Doctor Nefario, the three little girls manage to tap into some hidden reserve of goodness in Gru, which will profoundly change his life...and the lives of the girls as well.
