Spirit is a young buckskin Mustang stallion and the main character of the film ''Spirit: Stallion of the the Cimarron''.
Taking life for a game, he must learn during his trip to distrust but also to trust some men. He is considered an indomitable spirit, fighting to the last breath to keep his freedom, he reflects the image of the American West as still wild.

Rain is a paint mare who plays a fairly large part in the film. Her owner is the Lakota Indian, Little Creek (with whom she has a close bond), before she joins Spirit's herd. In the book ''Spirit of the West: Sierra'' Rain is named after the rain that begins to fall as soon as she first stands up.

The cougar was only on screen for under a minute. He/she was first seen by Spirit sneaking up on the twin foals, after being spotted he is attacked by Spirit. After putting up a fight he/she was chased off by the stallion.
He originally was meant to be another stallion but it was thought it would be better not to portray other horses in a bad way.

Basic Information
Little Creek is a Lakota Indian who Spirit meets at the Cavalry Post; they have both been captured. After they escape the Fort together, the young man seeks to tame Spirit using his own ways. After some time Little Creek comes to understand that Spirit cannot be tamed and a true friendship develops between them.

Where did that fact come from though?
Also, I think Esperanza has a much more important role than what's stated, but it is true that she doesn't appear much. She appears in the "Sound the Bugle" scene, in Spirit's vision.
I think Spirit's tie is really to his herd, rather than his homeland, though. After all, the song goes, "Where YOU are is home," not "Where the land is, is home." "Wherever YOU STAY, I'll find the way."
And one more thing: I know it's official, but Matt Damon's narration is one of the worst things about the film. Bryan Adams is Spirit's real voice, not Matt Damon--he's an imposter D:
