Defining Renders, Linearts & Bases

Date : January 03, 2015

Question :

Okay, I have done a search and did not see any question similar to this, so here goes.

I have seen many people use the terms renders, blank renders, linearts and bases referring to art and am unclear on what they mean. What is the meaning and context of each and how would you correctly use each term?

Best answer :

Renders-Screenshot(s) from a movie/series traced on a computer program like Paint, Gimp, or SAI. (Nobody but the person who makes the render can recolour them.)
Blank Renders/Bases- They both mean the same thing. traced screenshots that can be recoloured by anyone.
Linearts- drawings that can be recoloured.

Bases are often used to describe traced screenshot that is free to use/recolour/modify by others, but it's not a rule. A hand drawing that is free to use/modify can be called a base too.
Lineart is basicaly an outline of a drawing, it doesn't have to be free to use.
A render aka. recolor is a trace of a movie screenshot.
