"Hey Kani, sorry I haven't seen you for ages. I've been exploring in the outskirts of the Pridelands. Have you seen the elephant graveyard?" He shook his head. "Well, I always thought it was spooky and creepy, but actually there are plants growing there and it looks quite cool. I even found a cave with more paintings in."
She paused, realising she was going on too much.
"Anyway, I thought you should check it out. I've missed you."

Kani smiled as he listened to Maliha. "I've missed you, too," He said. "I'd love to see it!"
"What's goin' on, Kani?" Tawia ran towards her brother and looked at Maliha. "Hello, Maliha!"

Moto was about to reply when he saw Radhi, and felt it best to let her speak to her friends. He gave a warm smile as he turned to leave. "You can come consult me about it later, Kani," Moto said, then he turned and padded back to his cave to stretch before his next border patrol.

"Hi Tawia! You've grown up so much! I must come back and talk to you later because I've just promised to show something to your big brother. Is that okay?"
Maliha saw Tawia nod before she leapt off, hearing Kani right behind her. She ran down Pride Rock into the grasslands before turning so she faced the back of Pride Rock.
"This way," she called, leaping off to the secluded cave area she discovered on her travels. Once she reached the entrance, she brushed away the falling vines and walked inside. She heard Kani gasp.
"I have no idea what this place is called but it is full of pictures of lions. All except the one in the middle. Only one's a lion. There's an egret, hippo, cheetah and honey badger surrounding him, but all the other pictures have five lions. What do you think it is? And why haven't we been told about it?"

Kani looked around the cave, surprised. He, too, had never seen it before. "I don't know," He said. "It's... Weird. Do you think King Taji would know?"

"Maybe... Let's go and ask him!"
Together they ran back up to the entrance of Pride Rock. On the way in they saw Queen Rakhi.
"Hi Queen Rakhi, is King Taji inside?"
"Hi Maliha, it's good to see you back. I think he's inside. And please, just call me Rakhi."
"Thanks, and I will."
She ran inside, Kani close on her heels. "Brother, can I show you something?"
"Of course Maliha. What is it?"
"A cave I found whilst exploring. It has different coloured pictures in it."
"Sounds like my mate's cave," said Radhi, joining the conversation. "But surely you should recognise it after hearing so many stories in there when you were cubs."
"It's different to Tafari's. It is full of pictures of lions in groups of five, all except the central group which has a lion joined by a hippo, egret, cheetah and honey badger."
"Can you show me the way?"
"And can I come too?"
"Sure, follow me!"
Maliha showed them into the hidden cave.
Taji looked at all the paintings - they looked like Rafiki's, but the old mandrill had passed away a few seasons ago so he couldn't ask him. He tried racking his brains for anything that could lead to the discovery of what this cave was.
"I don't know, Maliha, but I'm sure someone in the Pridelands could remember."
"Who?"
"How about the tortoises by the waterhole?"
"Yeah! One of them is bound to remember! Come on!"
Maliha left again, leading the way, but soon she let Taji take the lead and went to join Kani.
"Isn't this exciting?"

Kani nodded. "Yes, but I still wonder why none of use were ever told about it."

Far from them was a lioness, chasing a gazelle. Just when she nearly caught it she stopped and could see a huge rock and lions in the distance.

"Ohno, lions....," She thought, forgeting about the gazelle which was faraway now. She stepped back and looked around, scared that there might be lions close by.

"Is it quite puzzling, isn't it?" replied Maliha. "Oh well, let's just find out what it means!"
Radhi kept running through the grasslands when all of a sudden she heard the thundering of hooves. "Everyone, wait here, there's a stampede."
Maliha stopped running until the gazelle had passed. As the dust began to clear, she caught sight of a lioness hidden in the grass. She leapt over, Kani following behind her.
"Hello," she said, "I'm Maliha. Welcome to the Pridelands."
Then she noticed an expression of recognition in Kani's eyes. "Kani, do you know her?" she asked, trying, but failing, to keep the jealousy and hurt out of her voice. 'Was this a previous friend of his?' she thought to herself.

Kani gasped when he saw the lioness. "She... She looks like my father...," He said. "Almost exactly like him..."

The lioness stared at them. "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know this was your territory, I'll get out now," She began to leave but then stopped. "Um, did you say 'Kani'? My father told me about a lion named that, who was my half brother. By the way, I'm Kella."

"Hi Kella," Maliha replied, looking between Kani and Kella. They looked really quite similar. "So Kani's your half brother?" she said, not quite believing her luck. Kella wasn't there to take him away from her.
"Well, welcome anyway Kella. Would you like to help us find the tortoises by the waterhole? We need to ask them a question about our history."

"Yes, I'd love to come!" Kella smiled. "I've always wanted to meet Kani and Mara, but my father said they weren't allowed in the pride anymore." She looked at them. "So... You're Maliha and he's Kani, so who are they?"

"That's my brother, Taji. He's King of the Pridelands. And this is Radhi, my cousin, or adopted sibling, whichever way you look at it."
"Pleased to meet you, Kella," said Taji. "You are welcome in the Pridelands."
"Come on everyone, to the waterhole!"
Maliha sped off in the direction of the waterhole, hoping everyone was following her. As soon as she arrived she began looking for the tortoises. "There they are," she cried, spotting them in a sunny patch of clean water. She ran round to meet them, but Taji pulled her back before she could speak. "Taji!"
"I am the King, and therefore I should speak."
He crouched down and spoke to the tortoises.
"Hello, we know you to be some of the longest living animals in the Pridelands. I don't suppose you could help us, could you?"
One of the tortoises lifted it's head. "Sure we can help. What is it?"
"My sister, Maliha, found a cave behind Pride Rock with lots of different pictures inside, but it wasn't Kabili/Tafari's cave. It wasn't even the birthing cave/Scar's cave either. But what we noticed was that each group of paintings were of five lions, all except the one in the centre. This was a lion, hippo, egret, cheetah and honey badger. I don't suppose you happen to know what this is?"
"I haven't heard of it myself," the tortoise replied, "but perhaps our elder knows. She has been alive a very long time."
The tortoise paddled it's way to the shore, but instead of climbing out, he brushed away some of the reeds. "Oh, distinguished elder, the King needs some help."
The elder lifted her wrinkled head and nodded, moving slowly before Taji. "What is it, wise King?"
Taji retold the story, hoping the elder could shed some light on the subject.
"Ahh, yes," the elder said once he'd finished. "The last five you spoke of would be Kion, leader of the Lion Guard. The others were his friends, Beshte, Ono, Fuli and Bunga. They were protectors of the Pridelands at a time when hyenas kept trying to take over."
"What happened to them?" Maliha asked.
"I don't know," replied the elder. "I was very young, too young to remember much. I think he reached adulthood, but I cannot tell. Maybe they ran away, or did someone die and the Lion Guard split up? Who knows, I can't remember."
"So, what was the Lion Guard? Who was in it?"
"The Lion Guard was always set up by the second oldest cub belonging to the King and Queen of the Pridelands. It had to contain the bravest, fiercest, boldest, fastest and keenest of sight in the Pridelands. I'd heard that, before Kion came along, the Lion Guard was only made up of lions, but Kion changed that."
"Weren't there any girls in this Lion Guard thingy?" Maliha asked again.
"Only Fuli, the cheetah, that I am aware of. King Taji, if you are thinking about setting up the Lion Guard again you must consult the Great Kings of the Past."
"I just don't understand, my father was King, but he had two elder brothers, but there wasn't any Lion Guard."
"Maybe the Great Kings of the Past knew that giving one of you the power of the Roar would be destructive for the Pridelands. You should ask them."
"The Roar?"
"Yes, the leader of the Lion Guard had the gift of the Roar, a blessing from the Kings of the Past, wich always made them the fiercest. Kion had that power, I remember it well." The elder tortoise yawned. "Is that all?"
"Yes, thank you for telling us about the Lion Guard," Taji said, bowing before her to show his respect. "We are very grateful for your knowledge and advice."
As the group started to wander away from the waterhole, processing the information they'd just heard, Maliha went up to Kani and his sister Kella. "So, what do you think of that? Wasn't that unbelievable?"

Kani nodded, "But now I'm even more confused!"

Kella looked at Maliha. "But I don't quite understand it all... A lion who has a roar power? I guess there's a lot about the Pride Lands I don't know."
